National Haemovigilance Unit

Haemovigilance is a vital component of the modern day transfusion practice and is a tool to improve the quality and safety of the transfusion chain. The main purpose of maintaining a haemovigilance system is to actively monitor the unwanted effects in the entire transfusion chain, thereby enabling us to analyze and disseminate data and take appropriate actions when required.

The national hamovigilance system is maintained by the National Haemovigilance Unit (NHU) at the National Blood Center – Colombo 05. Established in 2009, the National Haemovigilance System operates through data collected from all the blood banks island-wide, regarding the donor-related, process-related and recipient-related adverse events as well as near-miss events. Under the direct supervision of Consultant Transfusion Physician-In-Charge of NHU, the medical officers analyse the collected data, and preventive and corrective measures are taken accordingly.

The collected and analysed data is compiled to a final document annually by NHU which is used as an educational tool and as a self teaching guide.
