About

This recognition for NBTS Sri Lanka, is a result of the strong successful collaborative work with WHO carried out over many years. Declaration of self-sufficiency of blood supply with 100% voluntary, non-remunerated blood donations and hosting of World Blood Donor Day 2014 global event in Sri Lanka with great success was the landmark of this process.

Period of designation commenced on 7th September 2018.

TORs

NBTS has agreed upon three terms of references with WHO for further collaborating activities. This includes the following;

  1. Training and Education : To collaborate with WHO to provide special training programs / courses on Transfusion Medicine for international trainees. This includes developing criteria, learning points and curriculums for trainees of Transfusion Medicine in WHO member states as a part of the WHO effort in capacity building of staff attached to National Blood Transfusion Services. NBTS will conduct courses as per the agreed timelines with WHO.

  2. To contribute to WHO’s work in development of IEC materials in the field of blood transfusion : This includes development of guidelines, manuals and methodologies to educate people on voluntary blood donation in order to improve the blood safety and provision of training for the international trainees selected by the WHO.  

  3. To assist WHO in implementing quality system in blood transfusion service : This includes development of quality manual to blood centers regarding all the steps from blood collection to transfusion to help the member states to develop their quality systems.
