The National Blood Transfusion Service (NBTS) proudly celebrated World Blood Donor Day 2026 under the theme:
“One Drop of Humanity. Give Blood. Give Plasma. Save Lives.”
The national commemorative ceremony was held with the participation of over 1,000 blood donors, healthcare professionals, government officials, development partners, and well-wishers from across Sri Lanka, recognizing the invaluable contribution of voluntary blood and plasma donors who help save thousands of lives each year.
The event was graced by the Chief Guest, Minister of Science and Technology, alongside distinguished guests including the Secretary to the Ministry of Health and Mass Media, Additional Secretaries of the Ministry of Health, senior officials of the health sector, representatives of partner organizations, medical specialists, hospital administrators, blood bank staff, and donor organizations from all parts of the country.
The ceremony highlighted the critical role of voluntary non-remunerated blood donors in maintaining a safe and adequate blood supply for patients requiring emergency treatment, major surgeries, cancer therapy, maternal care, and the management of blood disorders. Special recognition was given to dedicated repeat donors whose continued generosity has made a significant impact on the lives of countless patients.
A key feature of the event was the presentation of awards and certificates to outstanding blood donors and donor organizations in appreciation of their exceptional commitment to supporting the national blood programme. The gathering also served as an opportunity to raise awareness about the ongoing need for regular blood and plasma donation and to encourage greater public participation in this humanitarian cause.
Addressing the audience, the distinguished speakers emphasized that voluntary blood donation remains one of the most selfless acts a person can perform, directly contributing to the health and wellbeing of communities throughout the country. They also commended the efforts of the National Blood Transfusion Service, healthcare workers, donor recruitment teams, and community organizations for their dedication to ensuring a stable and safe blood supply for Sri Lanka.
The National Blood Transfusion Service extends its sincere gratitude to every blood and plasma donor, donor organizer, healthcare worker, volunteer, and partner organization whose unwavering support continues to save lives and strengthen the nation’s healthcare system.
Together, we celebrate the heroes who give hope through blood donation and reaffirm our commitment to ensuring that safe blood is available for every patient who needs it.
