The National Blood Transfusion Service (NBTS) proudly inaugurated the new Blood Bank at Base Hospital Medawachchiya on 16 July 2026, marking another important milestone in strengthening access to safe and timely blood transfusion services in Sri Lanka.
The opening ceremony was graced by the Director of the National Blood Transfusion Service, the Provincial Director of Health Services – North Central Province, the Chairman of the Medawachchiya Pradeshiya Sabha, along with distinguished invitees, healthcare professionals, hospital staff, voluntary blood donors, and members of the local community.
The establishment of the Blood Bank at Base Hospital Medawachchiya is expected to significantly enhance the availability of safe blood and blood components for patients in the region, while improving the efficiency and accessibility of transfusion services. It also strengthens the capacity of the National Blood Transfusion Service to respond promptly to emergency and routine transfusion requirements.
Addressing the gathering, the officials highlighted the vital role of voluntary non-remunerated blood donors in maintaining an adequate and safe blood supply. They encouraged the public to continue supporting the national blood donation programme and emphasised that every donation has the potential to save multiple lives.
The National Blood Transfusion Service extends its sincere appreciation to all stakeholders, healthcare staff, donors, and community members whose commitment and support made the establishment of the new Blood Bank possible.
